In his prescient novel 1984, George Orwell wrote, “Every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered… History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
In Orwell’s centralized government “utopia,” the manipulation of language was an essential, integral part of the plan for tyranny. The American Left now embodied by the Marxist-Democrat Party historically has modified the definition of words and the meaning of terms for political benefit, to empower their base in furthering their ideological agenda and to confuse the frightened Republican Party leadership into submission.
Democrats have done this with hundreds of words and phrases over decades. Consider the supposedly innocuous family of currently-used “phobias.” A phobia is a FEAR of something. Altering “phobia,” Democrats add the word “hate” to the word “fear,” misapplying both. Hence the use of homophobic, Islamophobic, or transphobic, for example. Many don’t fear or hate homosexuals, they simply disagree with or don’t condone their behavior. Similarly, many don’t fear or hate transsexuals. And an aversion to Islam is certainly not “fearing” or “hating” Muslims. But fear and hate are used by Democrats, incorporated in political attacks on their enemies. Republicans never push back on this word abuse; they simply accept it – surrender to the verbal attacks and accusations, then run away instead of standing their ground. They have been cursed with this inordinate fear ever since the Left established the boundaries of “political correctness,” plaguing this nation for over 50 years and used by those who politically benefit from fear and hate.
Of course, academic and other institutions readily participate when new phrases or terms are needed or words must have definitions expanded to satisfy the political agenda of the Left.
The revered Merriam-Webster Dictionary, which has become one of these more pliable establishments, recently exhibited their cultural “wokeness.” As the Media Research Center (MRC) discovered, English dictionaries have become more inclusive, adding a new definition for the word “female,” possibly to allow a newly appointed Supreme Court justice more comfort in her own skin, since she refused to define “woman” in her recent Senate confirmation hearings.
MRC’s Brent Bozell explained the situation and the cause for alarm, tying the alert to Orwell: “Now obviously, science and common sense haven’t changed in the three years since the last correct iteration of that definition. But society has crumbled…”
“The reason why gaining a foothold on controlling language [is important] is because words have meaning, and words and definitions of words shape our thoughts. If one side can fundamentally change what the definition of words are so as to alter our view of reality, then that side can control almost everything else. “In George Orwell’s famous novel 1984, he writes, ‘Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.’ If this is not a shockingly accurate description of what the Left is attempting to do through radically altering language, I don’t know what is.”
The Consumer Price Index (CPI or inflation rate) for the Second Quarter 2022 is 9.1% — the Worst since 1981. If the former far more realistic formula for determining inflation is used (as in 1980), we’re experiencing over 17%. For the second quarter in a row, the U.S. GDP has scored negative; the First Quarter at -1.6% and the Second Quarter at -0.9%. “Recession” is defined as: “A period of temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial activity are reduced, generally identified by a fall in GDP in two successive quarters.” (emphasis added)
That fact is very uncomfortable for the Biden Regime, so a redefinition of the term “recession” was launched the other day from the White House Press Room, in order to cover, and deflect from, the incompetence of the Biden economic policy, which has inflicted substantial inflation on the American public.
No sooner had Biden’s handlers launched the language propaganda than Wikipedia rushed to follow, trying as quickly as possible to rearrange the meaning of recession in 45 different places on its site. Manipulating language is a certain sign of the Marxist-Democrats’ progression toward an oppressive tyranny; the objective, full-blown dystopia. However, simply changing definitions will never alleviate the problems caused by the policies and ideology of the same people who are changing words to deflect blame.
Of course, they really aren’t looking to alleviate.
